Setting:
The setting is Dragon Pass, in Glorantha, starting in 1625.
Glorantha, you say?
Glorantha is a long lived fantasy world, used in board games, fiction, and roleplaying games (most notably RuneQuest, in its various incarnations, and HeroQuest). Unlike most Generic Fantasy Worlds, it is analogous to Bronze Age Earth, rather than Medievalesque(tm). Also unlike most Fantasy Worlds, the Gods are very much part of the setting.
Gods? That sounds a bit odd.
Well, yes. And it gets a bit odder. The Runes, representations and manifestations of power, give a way of describing your character, their beliefs and strengths, and also a way of describing Gods- For example, the Honourable Warrior God of Death, Humakt, has Runes of Death and Truth. His followers will typically be strong in these, and these will tend to guide their behaviours.
Isn't that what Alignment is for?
Um, no. There is no alignment. You want to burn down that orphanage, go knock yourself out. It may remodel your Runes (disorder, death, Fire, Illusion), but it won't turn you 'Evil'. You've done that bit yourself.
Good lord. Next you'll be saying there aren't any levels!
That's right. People use percentile skills, which improve through use, rather than through killing an arbitrary amount of goblins and looting their stuff.
Uh…. character classes?
No. None of those, either. You want to be a magician? Well, yeah. Practically everyone has SOME sort of magic in this world. You want to learn to fight? Go ahead. You might be better at one, or the other, but it's not an either-or situation.
